Asus Eee PC 1008HA
There is no shortage of netbooks (ultraportable budget laptops) on the market, but the new ASUS Eee PC 1008HA "Seashell" might prove to be one of the best netbooks yet. It is thin, sleek, and light, and at least one Macworld editor is eyeballing it with interest. Besides all of this, the Asus Eee PC 1008HA netbook is no MacBook.
• Features:
Under its frosty exterior, the system sports uptotheminute netbook innards: an Intel Atom N280 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, Bluetooth, 802.11n, and a threecell battery (that survived tests in the PC World Test Center for four hours, 55 minutes).
The keyboard originally has its full size, with a good layout, and it feels big and comfortable. The buttons are firm and large enough to type on with ease. Even the metallic mousebutton bar was reasonably secureand I especially like Asus's treatment of the touchpad. Instead of using dainty trim or a different material to indicate that you are within the strike zone, this model incorporates tiny bumps. As aresult, the netbook looks as though it has a mild rash.
• Advantages:
Where the 1008HA really stands out from other netbooks on the market is in its svelte profile and light weight. Measuring 10.3 x 7.0 x 1.0 inches, the 1008HA is a little thinner than netbooks. At 2.4 pounds, the 1008HA is also light, even for a netbook. We easily held the netbook in one hand, and it felt almost nonexistent in our shoulder bag, even with the charger. It is also pricey compared to other notebooks in the market today.
• Disadvantages:
The builtin speakers, like those found on virtually all netbooks, are pretty weak. You can use them to listen to short online video clips or system alert sounds, but if you want to enjoy music or a featurelength movie while traveling then you will need to purchase a good set of headphones.
• Conclusion:
Asus has delivered a very refined and classy netbook without sacrificing functionality and this should be applauded. In addition, while it is expensive for a netbook, it delivers enough that it is not extortionate. Thus, if you are after a little more refinement than regular netbooks can deliver, this is your best bet.
